From the book “Repetition” by Doris Cohen

I’m reading “Repetition” by Doris Cohen and wanted to share this quote with you.

“His mother emotionally betrayed him because she didn’t behave as the authority figure—that is, as the parent he could depend on for comfort, guidance, and support. Instead, she made Tony her confidant and grew emotionally dependent on him.”

However, her habit of turning to Tony for comfort and relying on him for emotional support was completely inappropriate. Tony was now being held responsible for nurturing her feelings, while at the same time he was disconnecting from her because her behavior felt so threatening to him. Their roles had been reversed: He was the child taking care of the mother, instead of the other way around. His mother’s dependence on Tony implied emotional incest.”
